Probiotics are made up of live microorganisms designed to help restore healthy gut flora in the microbiome, assist with digestion and fight pathogens and harmful bacteria that can cause diseases. They occur naturally in fermented foods such as sauerkraut & kimchi or kefir, yoghurt & cheese. Probiotics are not created equally and can assist us in different ways. Some of the common strains you may see are Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces. Understanding the differences and their diverse functions is important so that when you are choosing a probiotic, you are choosing one necessary for specific health conditions or one that is more generalised to maintain overall health. 


Lactobacillus species

Acidophilis- Can assist with antibiotic use, acute diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, lactose intolerance (help metabolise lactose), bacterial vaginosis (yeast infection) and support immunity.
Rhamnosus- Can assist with acute diarrhoea, urinary tract infections, atopic dermatitis and irritable bowel syndrome symptoms.
