Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA's) have been receiving bad press recently in favour of saturated fats.
However, Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) is not just any old polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)!
What makes Evening Primrose Oil special?
EPO also contains the additional Omega 6 fatty acid Gamma-linolenic-acid (GLA). The GLA is what gives EPO many of its medicinal qualities including helping to ease the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). GLA relieves pain and inflammation.
In optimal health states the body converts linoleic acid (LA) to GLA, however many of us are not good converters and do not have sufficient activity of the enzyme delta-6-destarurase to convert LA into GLA.
In the case of PMS it seems that many women do not convert linoleic acid well. This results in increased sensitivity to proinflammatory compounds in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.
Supplementing with GLA from a good EPO supplement could bypass this problem and normalise the sensitivity.
EPO relieves menstrual symptoms
Because of the GLA content in EPO, this nutritive oil has a proven track record in helping to relieve symptoms associated with PMS due to hormonal irregularities, including;- menstrual cramps
- period pain
- heavy periods
- irregular periods
- anxiety
- mood swings
- headaches and even
- acne
