How to escape that stuffed feeling after Christmas Overindulgence

How to escape that stuffed feeling after Christmas Overindulgence
  • Health advice
  • Dec 21, 2016
It’s that time of year again! Christmas overindulgence may seem inevitable. Parties, dinners, days spent eating, drinking and being merry. During the party season, many of us eat foods we wouldn’t normally overindulge in (like cakes and sweets), or drink more sweet drinks and alcohol than we normally would (it is the season for egg nog and a cheeky Champers, right?). It is in this eating more sugar and fatty food, and drinking more sugary and alcoholic drinks, that your liver and digestive system come under extra stress and tension.

What puts your liver get put under so much pressure at the holidays?

Your liver is your body’s key organ of detoxification. Once your food is broken down and absorbed by your digestive tissues, that nutrient rich blood is sent to the liver. It is here in the liver that your body works to further break down sugar, fats and alcohol. It’s no wonder then, that during the Christmas season your liver could do with some extra help and support. The good news is there is a simple way to look after your liver while you are increasing its load.

Other lifestyle factors to help with Christmas Overindulgence

When your liver is under extra stress there are some simple steps you can use to ensure it remains able to keep up with those extra demands:
  • Drink 2 litres of water a day (and more if you drink alcohol) – water is needed for your liver to be able to flush through toxins. Never is water more important than when your liver is under extra stress from fat, alcohol and sugar
  • Drink warm water with lemon first thing in the morning – not only will your body reap the benefits of extra hydration, the lemon is great for encouraging a healthy liver and healthy digestion
  • Eat plenty of bitter greens – not only do bitter green vegetables help to encourage fat digestion, they also support the liver’s detoxification processes. To get the best benefits out of your leafy greens, consume them at the beginning of your meal
  • Take an herbal liver tonic!

Liver tonic herbs

The liver uses a complex process to detoxify your blood. When taking herbs to support your liver, you want to be sure to take a formulation that contains both the herb Milk Thistle (also known as St Mary’s Thistle) and Globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus). These herbs support multiple liver processes and, when used together, ensure gentle liver support without overburdening the body.
