Krill Oil: The ‘gold standard’ for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels

  • Health advice
  • Apr 24, 2012
Krill Oil photoKrill oil has emerged as the ‘must have’ oil if you want to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. It is now considered to be far superior to fish oil when taken at an equal or even lower dosage. Krill oil assists in the maintenance of normal, healthy cholesterol levels, improves the LDL:HDL (high-density lipoprotein or ‘good’ cholesterol) ratio and helps keep triglyceride levels within the normal range.

Krill and Omega-3

Krill oil is naturally high in Omega-3 essential fatty acids, phospholipids, Vitamins A and E and Astaxanthin. The eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) essential fatty acids found in Krill oil are bound to phospholipids allowing greater absorption than other forms of fish oil. Greater absorption improves Omtega-3 stores and means less reflux and burping when compared to taking traditional fish oils. Studies show between 24% to45% increased bioavailability of EPA and DHA from Krill oil versus fish oil.

Astaxanthin - Krill's potent antioxidant

Astaxanthin gives krill oil its rich, red colour and offers potent antioxidant protection for your body, helping to keep the Krill oil fresh and unspoiled. As an antioxidant, Astaxanthin is reportedly 500 times stronger than a-tocopherol and 40 times more potent than beta-carotene.

What are Krill?

Krill are small crustaceans that feed on Astaxanthin rich plankton in the pristine, icy waters of the Antarctic Ocean. Krill are at the very bottom of the food chain, meaning there is no accumulation of contaminants as can be found in marine life higher up the food chain. Krill oil is pure and natural and does not contain any additives or preservatives. Krill oil in Australia is tested for heavy metals and purity according to strict standards. The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) restricts the annual krill harvest to 4 million tons in order to ensure sustainability. Currently, the annual catch of 200,000 tons per year from all Krill fisheries is far below this margin. Therefore, krill oil is sustainably sourced and the specialised harvesting process minimises by-catch of other species.
