Sourced from the resin of the Boswellia tree, and known traditionally for its use in Ayurvedic medicine, Boswellia has been used as a 'go to' remedy for arthritis and back pain for over 6,000 years. The active ingredients of Boswellia are the boswellic acids, extracted from the Boswellia gum oleoresin, that are believed to be responsible for the herb's anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties.

All that glitters...

Once more valuable than gold, Boswellia (also known by its common name ‘Frankincense’) is native to India and Egypt, This aromatic gum is still used in the making of incense and  as an external wound healer and was used as embalming agent. It was one of the first known cosmetic agents, used by Egyptian women to paint their eyelids, whilst also being used as an eye wash for soothing sore eyes. In the Ayurvedic healing tradition of India, Boswellia is used to treat conditions associated with inflammation including asthma, skin conditions and rheumatism, where it also works to help prevent the breakdown of cartilage tissue. It is also used to promote healthy teeth and gums, and externally to support wound healing.

Modern applications

In Western herbal medicine, Boswellia is used to reduce the inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and support the body’s natural process of joint tissue restoration and repair. Specific extracts of Boswellia have shown to be more concentrated than a standard extract, making the ability to dose this herb effectively, much easier. Taken daily, Boswellia works well with other joint nutrients to support a reduction in joint pain and degradation.
