Does Andropause really exist? The 'man-opause' story...

  • Health advice
  • Apr 03, 2014

andropause word in letterpress typeWhat is Andropause?

Andropause is the age related decline in testosterone that occurs in men. It is the  male equivalent of  menopause and is sometimes referred to as "man-opause" Age related declines in testosterone are usually very gradual and seem to start at the age of 40.

Symptoms include:

  • lack of energy
  • fatigue
  • obesity
  • thinning skin
  • muscle shrinkage
  • depression
  • reduced libido
  • general aches and pains
Declining levels of testosterone will not affect all men the same way. Some men require smaller amounts of testosterone to function well whilst others need higher amounts. Men also produce a certain amount of oestrogen and it is important that testosterone and oestrogen be balanced for optimal health.

What happens in Andropause?

During andropause, as testosterone declines, it is apparent that oestrogens do not decline. This can have adverse effects on prostate health. Also, elevated oestradiol can contribute to andropause by causing further reductions in testosterone. Organs and glands, such as the adrenal and liver, play and important role in hormone balance in middle-aged men. Their health is of paramount importance in ensuring the best hormone balance for healthy ageing. Although it is a natural process, the symptoms of andropause can be reduced by an appropriate health assessment followed by a custom made dietary and supplemental program.
