The 5 Essential Vitamins for good health in pregnancy

Vitamins are vital for good health, both your's and your baby's. There are five in total: A,B,C,D,and E, all of them need to be consumed from foods with the exception of D which you can obtain from sunlight. Many people now 'slip, slop slap', and when  in the sun cover their bodies with a hat and long sleeves, so if this is you, definite supplementation is required as Vit D helps with hormonal balance including sex hormones. A,C and E are antioxidants which protect the body from free radicals. Vit B and C are not stored in the body, so adequate daily intake is required. Vit C is broken down when exposed to air and heat so eating raw fruits and vegetables are preferable to cooked.

What about Minerals and pregnancy?

Minerals and trace elements are needed as after conception the baby will take all of the mother's. Most important are Iron, Calcium and Zinc.
  • A doctor can do a blood test to see if there is an Iron deficiency. If so iron rich foods include, liver, prunes and apricots, also a well absorbed iron supplement that does not constipate is recommended. Vit C from a freshly squeezed orange helps iron absorption. Do not consume milk at the same time as this inhibits absorption.
  • Zinc helps growth and boosts the immune system.
  • Calcium for healthy bones and teeth, foods include sesame seeds, dark green leafy veggies, are preferable to milk as this contains an enzyme that leeches calcium out of the body.
