While eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly give you a good start to better health, your body requires more than that. There are a number of other steps you should take to promote optimal health like getting good quality sleep, drinking plenty of water, and supporting your gut and immune health. Enter probiotics!
Probiotics fill in the gaps you don’t know about
Again, despite consuming healthy foods and exercising, it is possible to have gaps in your health. These gaps can lead to some pretty harmful conditions or diseases all caused by the lack of good bacteria within your body. Bacterial species within the human microbiome can be classified into three categories: core, variable, and transient. Core bacteria are common to all individuals and variable bacteria are more rare and unique to the individuals they are found in. Transient bacteria, which are introduced to the body through food or supplementation, leave the body after one to two weeks as their name implies. Now, you may think your gut and immune health are covered strictly with core and variable bacteria; but, that is not always the case! Several factors can attack and deplete the levels of good bacteria in your body such as:- Drinking alcohol
- Smoking
- Prescription medications (i.e. antibiotics)
- Over-the-counter drugs (NSAIDs)
- Environmental toxins
- Chlorine and/or fluoride
- Stress
- Diet high in preservatives or fat
- Diet low in fibre
- Ageing
More on Antibiotics and Gut Health
Antibiotics take their toll on gut health by wiping out populations of good bacteria. This can result in some rather unfavourable conditions like diarrhoea or yeast infections. And contrary to popular belief, you can take probiotics while on antibiotics to support good bacteria levels providing you take the probiotic 2 hours after the antibiotic.Mr Vitamins Recommends
