Milk Thistle has a long history as a powerful herb to support the liver.
Silybum marianum is the commonly used liver herb whose common names include Milk Thistle and St Mary’s Thistle.
By far, the most widely recognised use of Milk Thistle is as a 'liver herb'. Two of its major effects on the liver are:
- Protecting liver cells from potential damage from a range of toxins
- Promoting the liver’s remarkable capacity to heal and regenerate
Protection beyond the liver
However recent studies have found that milk thistle provides protection against oxidative cellular damage in other parts of the body, including:- The skin
- Breast tissue
- The prostate
- The bowel
- The cervix
- The lungs
- The kidneys
