Need more room to breathe?

Fish Oil SupplementsDo you need to breathe easier?

Fish oil has been shown to be a reliable way to reduce the inflammatory processes that play a significant role in many chronic diseases, including Asthma. The omega 3 fatty acids responsible for the beneficial health benefits associated with fish oil are eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA).

Study shows Fish Oil helps relieve bronch-oconstriction

One troublesome characteristic Asthma is broncho-constriction, which is tightening of the muscles around the airways, which reduces air flow. Around 80% of asthmatics experience exercise-induced broncho-constriction (EIB). In one study, sixteen asthmatic patients with documented EIB were either given a placebo or a fish oil capsule containing 3.2 grams of EPA and 2 grams of DHA daily for three weeks. They were asked to make no changes to their regular diet. The group taking the placebo showed expected rates and severity of EIB and the group taking the fish oil had significant reduction in severity of EIB with concurrent reduction in the use of bronchodilator medication.

Relief for Asthmatics

The overall result shows that fish oil supplementation may be an effective way to help manage EIB in asthmatics. Fish oil is also inexpensive, safe and easily obtainable. However if taking other medications, please speak to a qualified health professional to avoid any detrimental interactions with your medications.
