Omega 3: Where do fish oils come from? How do you get good quality?

Omega 3: Where do fish oils come from? How do you get good quality?

  • May 04, 2017
Whilst many of us take fish oils each day for general health, for arthritis or for an inflammatory condition, have you ever stopped to think about where your fish oils come from and how it is harvested?

Why Fish Oils ain’t Oils

Many fish make up fish oil extracts. Some are obvious from the labelling of a product, such as those sourced from Salmon oil. But it is important to make sure you ask your manufacturer if the product is 100% Salmon oil, as some industry standards allow a product to be named ‘Salmon oil’ with only a relatively low percentage of the oil truly being sourced solely from Salmon. Other products named ‘Fish oil’, can be sourced from a number of differing fish species, including small ocean fish such as anchovies, sardines and mackerel. When sourced from multiple species, it is important to know where your fish are caught and what standards are adhered to for the treatment of these fish, including how they are transported to an extraction facility and what safeguards are in place to assure sustainable harvesting techniques are being employed. Depending on where your fish are sourced and where the oils are extracted, differing regulations apply.  In Norway, for example, the methods used to extract oils and those regarding the transportation of fish to their manufacturing facility are amongst the highest in the world.

Nutra-Life Triple Strength Omega 3 - The OceanClean™ difference

Nutra-Life’s high quality, ocean derived concentrated Omega-3s are sustainably harvested from the Eastern Atlantic and Eastern Pacific oceans during the months of May and November each year, Extracted in Norway within 35 hours of capture, Nutra-Life Triple Strength Omega 3 oils are sourced from small, clean Omega-3 rich species including sardines and anchovies then quality tested for purity, naturally lemon flavoured, and encapsulated in a natural orange flavoured capsule to reduce fishy odours. By choosing only small, targeted species such as anchovies and sardines, sustainability is assured as the small oily fish have little or no demand for human consumption, are fast growing, and experience short reproductive cycles.
