Soothe Irritated Skin Conditions with the Power of Chamomile

  • Health advice
  • Jun 30, 2013
chamomile flowersIf you suffer from embarrassing rosacea, or sensitive skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or dry itching skin, then you know how uncomfortable and difficult it is to soothe your skin effectively, without causing any further irritation. While traditional pharmaceutical responses to these conditions include topical medicated creams, drugs and over-the-counter pain relievers, one small, simple and underrated herbal flower, may offer a natural soothing solution – chamomile.

Irritated Skin Conditions

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition, affecting all ages, and is characterized by facial redness or flushing from enlarged blood vessels just beneath the surface of the skin.  Left untreated, it tends to intensify. Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition in which the skin is red, irritated, itchy, cracked and dry. Psoriasis is a skin disease characterized by thick and red patches on the skin that are usually painful and very itchy.

Chamomile and its impact on irritated skin conditions

While most of us are familiar with the calming nature of chamomile tea, similarly, chamomile is gently and powerfully soothing on dry, sensitive and irritated skin conditions such as rosacea and psoriasis. Chamomile contains flavonoids that exhibit significant anti-inflammatory properties. It is also highly regarded for its analgesic (pain-relieving), wound healing and tissue regenerating actions.  It is known to be effective in promoting skin repair and, when applied topically, has excellent calming properties.

The benefits of Chamomile for skincare include

  • Relieves skin irritation and redness
  • Minimizes itching and inflammation
  • Soothes skin
  • Helps to heal wounds
  • Relieves mild burns
  • Soothes mild sunburn
