As well as being a flavourful spice, turmeric definitely fits the bill of a superfood. Containing the potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound curcumin that helps provide the magnificent colour, research is beginning to show the potential it has in the prevention, and even treatment of, degenerative conditions such as

  • blood sugar imbalances

  • inflammatory states such as atherosclerosis, arthritis and MS

Warming Turmeric Chai - Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant superfood

  • Prep time: 1 minute
  • Cook time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 1 Cup
  • Cuisine: Food as Medicine
  • Ingredients
  • ¼ C turmeric powder or freshly grated turmeric root
  • 1 C water
  • 1 Tbsp. coconut oil or butter (helps aid the absorption of the active compound curcumin)
  1. Mix the turmeric and water together in a saucepan and bring to a slow simmer, stirring well
  2. Add in the butter or coconut oil and continue to stir well – do not allow to boil over
  3. Simmer over a very low heat for 5 – 6 minutes, until a smooth and fragrant paste has formed – extra water may be added at this stage if the paste is too dry
  4. Store in the fridge in a sealed glass jar for up to 2 weeks
  5. Can also be added to smoothies, soups and curries
Turmeric Chai Drink

Warming Turmeric Chai - Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant superfood

  • 1 tsp of turmeric concentrate paste
  • 1 C of milk of choice – almond (macadamia or coconut are good choices)
  • 1 tsp of cinnamon powder
  • ¼ tsp cardamom powder or 2 whole pods (gently crushed)
  • ½ tsp fresh or powdered ginger
  • 2 whole cloves
  • A good grind of cracked pepper
  • 1 tsp of raw organic Manuka Health Manuka honey
  1. Mix the turmeric paste, milk and all the spices together in a small saucepan and bring to simmer point over a low heat
  2. Stir well until all is combined
  3. Continue to simmer for 3 minutes until fragrant
  4. Remove from heat and stir through 1 tsp of honey to sweeten
  5. Drink and enjoy the health giving benefits of turmeric!
