Food has a major impact on our mood. There are now big challenges in our community:- 1 out of every 10 Australian children struggle with ADHD
- 1 out of 100 children have Autism
- Nearly 1 in 10 children and 1 in every 25 adults struggle with depression
Vitamin B for Mental Health
A recent study out of the University of Western Australia highlights the role of Vitamin B deficiency in children’s mental health and behavioural disorders. “B-vitamins are essential for the production of neurotransmitters, like serotonin, which modulates behaviour in humans and can contribute to feelings of well-being and happiness,” said UWA Researcher Carly Herbison. Hundreds of studies world-wide link “mental health” issues with a range of nutrient imbalances. Low levels of minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids can affect mental health. Research has demonstrated links between low levels of zinc and eating disorders, low levels of B-vitamins and schizophrenia, and low levels of omega-3 oils and depression.Good news for mental health with nutritional medicine
The good news then is that many “mental health” issues traditionally believed to be hard-wired are actually very treatable and in some cases reversible through diet and nutritional medicine. “Adding in beneficial foods and eliminating offending foods can have a huge effect on mood, concentration, sleep, addictions and overall brain health” says Dr Frank Golik of Mindd Foundation. “There is a baseline the works for everyone but many food requirements vary by individual which is why it is so important to work with a health practitioner trained in nutritional medicine”.Join Pete Evans at the Food is Medicine Event
