Stress: It’s what you do with it that really counts!
A little stress can actually help mental focus and productivity, but stress can become a problem when you either have too much (or for too long), or you don’t respond to stress in a healthy way. Stress isn’t going anywhere, the good news is; you can help manage your response to stress.
Some research suggests your perception of stress can affect how you respond to it; does stress overwhelm you, or does it just come and go? Feeling capable of dealing with stress is important.
How your response to stress can affect you:
- Mild anxiety and restlessness
- Worry and nervous tension
- Forgetfulness and fatigue
- Nervous dyspepsia and indigestion
- Insomnia and sleep disturbance
Tips to a healthier stress response:
- Practice perceiving stress as something you can manage
- Start and end your day with a few slow breaths
- Don’t wait for stress to build, maintain daily stress-busting activities like exercising in fresh air
- Talk to a friend or family member. You may benefit from professional support from a Naturopath, who can recommend natural therapies and strategies to help manage stress
- Consider the natural benefits of herbal medicines; the Chinese herb Magnolia officinalis (Hou Po), is traditionally used to help relieve symptoms of mild anxiety and ease nervous indigestion, and Ayurvedic herb Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) traditionally used to help enhance resistance and adaptation to stress.
